Faith Community Walk in Carlisle
Last weekend, St. George's URC in Carlisle was delighted to take part in a Faith Community Walk around the city. This was the third walk, organised by Carlisle One World Centre, with routes visiting a variety of churches - the Mosque, the Buddhist Centre, the Cathedral and the University Chapel.
This time walkers visited the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, the Quaker Meeting House, the Border Kirk (Church of Scotland) and St. George's. At the URC, Lisa the Minister was delighted to talk about some of the things we share and some of the things that are different. People were particularly interested in hearing about how we managed to merge four denominations, keeping the traditions most valued in each and our decision-making processes, as well hearing about our history of female ministers and our ability to allow same sex marriage ceremonies.
The last stop of the day was at The Tullie, the city's museum, where participants heard about the work of the Cumbria Hindu Association. People were then able to enjoy local bread and cheese at the Big Lunch before looking around the Unity Festival. Now in its 10th year, the event, opened by the Major of Carlisle Anne Glendinning, brings people together to reflect on issues affecting people and the planet through music, workshops, talks and crafts.
