Who we are and how we came about
- We are Trinity Church, Cottam Hall and we have a worshipping congregation made up of people from all denominations and none. Our minister is the Reverend Lena Talbot. Lena and her husband Colin live in Church House, 15 Millersgate.
- We came about through people who belonged to the Anglican, Methodist and United Reformed Churches, recognizing the growth of Cottam Hall and wondering if there was a need for a Church
- Common sense dictated that there was no point in building churches of various denominations, it would just be a Church. In view of this we are an ecumeincal church comprised of the Anglican, Methodist and United Reformed Churches.
We believe that Trinity Church is here to:
- tell people the Good News of Jesus Christ.
- teach one another to love our neighbour as ourselves.
- tend those in need as we show the love of Jesus in our lives.
- treasure the earth and all its resources by caring for the environment in every way possible.
- transform the unjust structures of society by supporting those who are working to make the world a fairer place.
- We meet in Cottam Primary School, every Sunday except the Second Sunday of the month, at 10.00 a.m.
- We also meet every Second Saturday of the month at 5.30 p.m - this is our Saturday Sunday School with all age communion and we also have an all age communion class at 5.00 p.m. for those who wish to learn more about the Lord’s Table. Our music group also meet for practice at 5.00 p.m.
- Whilst we recognize the need to respect the traditions of all denominations, we also need the flexibility to be the church of the people.
- Our church is very much centred around the young people so we do not always have ‘traditional worship’
- The 4th Sunday of each month is all age worship and parade service, the music group will also play.
- If there is a 5th Sunday this is a celebration service and usually something special and different.
Our Music Group
- We have a Musical Director and a music group with the children of Cottam Hall
- If you would like to be a part of this, please contact Lena.
- The music group is a nucleus of eight to ten young people who play various instruments. We have keyboard players, flautists, a clarinet player, a cornet player, a guitarist and recorders. They are all under the watchful eye of Rebecca Carroll our musical director, who gives amazing encouragement and support to them all.

What our vision is
Currently we do not have a church building so our worship and meetings are held in Cottam Primary School or Church House (15 Millersgate Cottam.) However our aim is to have a building that will enhance the community of Cottam Hall. With this in mind we have a vision for:
- A place that will be more than just a Church but a beautiful building, a building with character, the sort of building that people feel at home in.
- A worship centre and a place for retreat a place where people come and rest from the rigours of life, the hustle and bustle, the stress and pressures of modern day living to find spiritual refreshment and renewal.
- A place to relax and unwind in, where worship happens at all times and any time, alongside coffee mornings and reading sessions.
- Somewhere for anyone to come into ‘their’ building, children, parents, young people, working people, retired people, people with hope and people in despair; people who have gifts and talents to bring to our community and those who feel they have nothing to offer can just come as they are, all will be welcome here.
- A building where people can 'play' and enjoy. A place where there is something for all ages, young people can ‘hang around’ in safety, kick a ball about, or just do what teenagers do.
- A place with beautiful gardens to sit in and play in, for the older ones to read the papers and drink tea while little ones toddle about.
- A place for rest and relaxation, for healing and calm, a place where troubled souls can find peace.
- A place where our daughters and sons feel they want to be married and have their babies baptised.
- A place of love and comfort and a place of beauty and joy.
- This is our hope and we surround that hope with a prayer that we can together make the hope a reality for the people of Cottam.
Communion
- At Trinity Church Cottam Hall, the wording used in our Communion Service follows the traditions of all the churches.
- We use fresh bread and pressed grape juice (non- alcoholic) in the remembrance of the last supper.
- Communion is integral to our worship and at the point of distribution of the bread and wine, we explain how this tradition came about.
- We have an open table in that anyone who loves the Lord Jesus may come and share. There is no discrimination of age or understanding.
- All are welcome to partake or not as each person feels. It is at parents or guardians discretion whether the children attending a Communion Service with your child, receives the bread and grape juice or not. We would not generally exclude anyone from the Lord’s Table.
The Tradition of Communion
- The Communion is a celebration of the Lord’s Supper – the last meal Jesus shared with his friends before being crucified.
- Jesus and the disciples would be sharing a traditional meal together; this was the feast of the Passover.
- The Passover was celebrated by the Jews each year. It is the time they remember how they were delivered out of slavery in Egypt. They cried out to God for help and Moses, was their rescuer.
- On the night of their flight from Egypt, when the angel of death ‘passed over’ all the Hebrew Houses, the Israelites ate a meal of unleavened bread, (there was no time to wait for the yeast to rise) lamb and bitter herbs.
- Each year this food was eaten by the Jews, (and still is today) as they remembered the Passover.
- At the last supper Jesus would have eaten this food, but we as Christians remember how he took the bread, gave thanks and broke it and gave it to his friends, explaining that this was his body which too would be broken for all of us. Jesus then took the wine and gave it to them also explaining that this was his blood shed for all for the forgiveness of sins.
- This is what we remember when we partake of our communion meal together. We take Jesus into ourselves when we partake of the bread and wine, we can then give something of Jesus to those whom we meet in our daily lives.
